No worries in Melbourne

Finding a bed in Melbourne during the Grand Prix was not easy, but there was a happy end. Over the Easter Weekend it was difficult again to find a bed. I had to stay in Sydney one more night and I had to plan ahead !

Sydney was not as inviting as Melbourne was. The surprise in Sydney I had on my last day: In the Botanical Gardens there were not only lots of parots, but also hundreds of big bats ( keine Fledermaeuse, sondern grosse Flughunde) in the middle of the city.

From Sydney I took a nightbus to Surfers Paradies. I stayed there one night and visited the town and Seaworld. I moved one the next day to Brisbane and I will stay here a couple of days, but again I rented a car for 2 days to be more flexible.

Probably on the 27.03.2008 i will move on further north to the Whitsunday Islands and upto Cairns.

In Cairns I hope to go diving and to relax a little bit before flying to Tokyo on the 08.04.2008

Australia part 1

My first two nights I spent in Ayers Rock and it was "amazing". I rented a car for 2 days and drove to Ayers Rock all 3 days and visited also the Olgas. Although I stayed in Ayers Rock Resort and everything is kind of close, I drove 300 km !

After my loop flight Ayers Rock-Cairns-Brisbane-Melbourne I spent 4 nights in Melbourne and 2 night along the Great Ocean Road with a rental car again. On the 2 days on the Great Ocean Road I drove 900 km !

When I was in Melbourne the first time, I found out that there is the Formula 1 Grand Prix Racing. Although not a great fan of the famous "Autofahrer" I bought a ticket for the testings on friday 2 days before the race !

Tomorrow I will head to Canberra and then on to Sydney.

I will not rent a car along the East Coast, but instead I bought a Greyhound Bus Pass from Melbourne to Cairns with many stops along the way ( 4478 km ) for 215 Euro.

Leaving New Zealand - South Island

On the south island, I visited the Abel Tasman National Park first, it it was really worth it. Due to the fact that I have a rental car in the moment and love to eat my Burger King in New Zealand, I thought I would gain weight, but I do walk a lot. The walk in Abel Tasman was a 6 hour walk. From there I drove to the Franz Joseph Glacier. And again I did a 6 hour hike up the bloody glacier with full gear and spikes.

I continued on to Queenstown, where I did some rafting down the Kawarau River. If you do any of this adventure stuff, you really have to spend money. The hiking trip up the glacier and rafting is abt. 80 Euro each.

With my lovely rental car I continued on via the Milford Sound to Dunedin and Christchurch.
Today I renturned my car and I managed to drive close to 5000 km with that car on the left side.

The next couple of days I will take a few flights to cross over to Australia and I will fly a loop via Ayers Rock to Melbourne in order to start from Melbourne to Cairns again overland. I still have to decide if I will take a rental car again.
